An electric pool heater, also called a heat pump, can bring water into a heating tank and then pump the warmed water back into the swimming pool. Using an electric pool heater is a good way to keep the pool warm, especially during the winter.

Types of electric pool heaters

Electric pool heaters can be divided into two types according to their power source: water-source electric pool heaters and air-source electric pool heaters. Water-source electric pool heaters are machines where heat flows from a water supply and then enters the pool. The water source is passed through an evaporator coil, changing it into warm Freon gas. By passing through a compressor, the gas is compressed to the hot Freon gas. This hot Freon gas is then sent through a condenser where the water of the swimming pool enters and departs. Pool water circulates through the wire, heating and returning back to the pool.

Air-source electric pool heaters do not produce heat themselves. Instead, they use electricity to extract the temperature of air and then transfer it from one place to another. Air-source electric pool heaters hold cool water within their coils, which transfer from water to air when the air’s heat flows over them. The gas is then compressed and sent to the extractor in order to warm the whole pool water.

Pros and cons of electric pool heaters

Electric pool heaters have a long lifespan, generally around 10 years. Besides, they are also eco-friendly, as they do not emit pollution to the environment. What’s more, electric pool heaters can be run at any time throughout the year, no matter what condition it is. However, the heating speed of electric pool heaters is slow. Installing electric pool heaters is also costly because they require lots of wiring and large circuit breakers.

Usage of electric pool heaters

According to the places where electric pool heaters are used, there are electric pool heaters for inground pool and electric pool heaters for above-ground pool. Utilizing an inground electric pool heater is an effective method to have an inground pool heated. It gets heat from the air and water and returns it back to the pool. It is a cost-effective option for people to heat their pool, and it can retain heat with a good pool cover, even though it may take longer to heat a pool. As for the above-ground pools, some users may not choose to heat them because this kind of pool is only utilized during the summer when the weather is warm. But if there are needs, an above-ground electric pool heater may come to help, especially for those with solar heating functions. When the sun is shining during the day, these electric pool heaters can heat the above-ground pool, making them a suitable option for users to have their pool heated.
