Drain stoppers prevent sinks, showers, and bathtubs from leaking when filled with water. By plugging the drain of the basin or tub, a bathroom drain stopper or sink drain stopper allows the bathtub or sink to fill with water by creating a secure seal. The water can then be used for washing, bathing, and other tasks. Once complete, the drain stopper is easily removed or lifted to let the water drain quickly and efficiently.

The most common types of drain stoppers

Drain stoppers are most often used in the bathroom or kitchen. Kitchen sink drain stoppers are small, fitted gadgets usually made of stainless steel featuring a thick rubber seal. These drain stoppers are shaped to fit the sink drain perfectly, preventing any water from escaping. Using the rubber lining and the pressure of the water, a tight seal is created once a few inches of water fills the sink. Kitchen drain stoppers make it easier to wash dishes, soak dishes, and wash other small household items.

Bathtub drain stoppers and shower drain stoppers are also extremely popular and versatile. The most common use of a pop up drain stopper is to fill a bathtub or shower with water for bathing and cleaning oneself. Baths are also used for stress relief. This pop up design is also used for most bathroom sink drain stoppers. Once the rod on the sink or bathtub faucet is lifted, it pulls on the internal pivot rod. This rod is attached to the drain stopper which is then pulled downward, pressing the stopper into place and creating a secure seal.

Other bathtub drain stopper types

Not all tub drain stoppers use a pivot rod and arm to function. Some work independently. These include push-and-pull drain stoppers, toe-touch stoppers, lift-and-turn stoppers, and flip-it drain stoppers. All of these designs work similarly by pulling up the knob and turning it slightly clockwise. This loosens the stopper and lets it fall into place. To remove it, the knob must be turned counterclockwise. These drain stoppers offer a simpler design but are not as durable and long-lasting as sink and tub drain stoppers equipped with a rod system.

What are bathtub and sink drain stoppers made of?

The most popular materials for sink and shower drain stoppers are rubber and different forms of steel, copper, ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), or PVC (plastics polyvinyl chloride). Rubber liners are a must for creating a tight seal and preventing leakage. Copper is one of the most popular plumbing materials due to its durability and resistance to damage and rust. PVC and ABS are a close second for creating drain stoppers for sinks, tubs, and showers.
