Product Description

What is Haematococcus Pluvialis

Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater species of Chlorophyta from the family Haematococcaceae. This species is well known for its high content of the strong antioxidant astaxanthin, which is important in aquaculture, and cosmetics.

Haematococcus pluvialis is usually found in temperate regions around the world.

Health benefits and industrial applications

Natural astaxanthin is preferred in dietary supplements in different forms (e.g. soft gels, tablets, capsules, syrups, oils, and creams), which are getting more and more popular due to the potent antioxidant and reactive oxygen scavenging effects of astaxanthin and an increasing number of studies on its health-promoting effects, including prevention and treatment of various diseases (cancers, chronic inflammatory diseases, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, liver diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, eye diseases including age-related macular degeneration, skin diseases, exercise-induced fatigue, male infertility, stimulation of immunisation, etc.)

In addition to its role as functional food ingredients or as dietary supplements, the major application of astaxanthin is as feed additive in aquaculture and the poultry industry . In aquaculture, astaxanthin plays an important role in enhancing flesh coloration (i.e., the pink color) of farmed salmonids which is desired by consumers. Since salmonids lack the ability to synthesize astaxanthin de novo, the pigment must be incorporated into their diets . In the poultry industry, astaxanthin is effective for increasing yolk coloration in eggs.

Skin care use

Astaxanthin is a very powerful antioxidant, many times more potent than vitamin E. This means that it can help to protect the skin, throughout the dermal layers, from the free radical damage that's partly responsible for the skin ageing process. In addition, astaxanthin helps to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, plus it improves the elasticity of the skin by aiding healthy skin cell function.
