Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid pigment only contained in brown seaweeds such as kelp, hijiki, and wakame seaweed in small quantities.

Fucoxanthin is a type of non-provitamin A carotenoid and it belongs to xanthophyll. Fucoxanthin has the allene structure and epoxide and hydroxyl groups. The structure of Fucoxanthin makes it has high bioactivity and multifunctionality.

Anti-obesity Effects: Two Types of Fat Cells

Fat cells are classified as either brown or white. White fat accumulates during unhealthy weight gain, whereas brown fat is essential for a healthy metabolism.

Uncoupled protein 1 (UCP1) is found abundantly in the mitochondria of brown fat cells and helps warm-blooded animals maintain a stable internal body temperature. This process, called thermogenesis, involves burning excess energy inside the body rather than storing it as fat. More UCP1 means a higher metabolism and less weight gain.
UCP1 is usually expressed in brown adipose tissue (BAT). However, adult humans have very little BAT and most of fat is stored in white adipose tissue (WAT).

Fucoxanthin primarily works via stimulating and increasing uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) expression in white adipose tissue (WAT), so that UCP1 can accelerate the oxidation of white fat and conversion of energy to heat and in turn decrease white adipose tissues.

Fucoxanthin perform higher antioxidative than other carotenoids

As carotenoids' activities, antioxidative activity is the most known. They can quench singlet oxygen and scavenge Free Radicals, which steal an electron from the carotenoid or form an adduct with it.

1. Fucoxanthin acts as an antioxidant under anoxic conditions whereas other carotenoids have practically no quenching abilities.

2. Fucoxanthin, on the other hand, donates electron as a part of its free-radical quenching function.
A combination of these distinct properties is very rarely found among naturally occurring food-derived compounds.
Fucoxanthin performs high antioxidative activity via enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activities and plasma total antioxidant capacity and fucoxanthin increase the protein expression of Nrf2 leading to enhanced expression of antioxidant protein NQO1.


Some adipokines are reported to alter insulin sensitivity and glucose and lipid metabolism in muscle, liver and adipose tissues.

The potential antidiabetic effects of FX are attributable to the ability of this molecule to induce weight loss and WAT reduction.

1. Fucoxanthin was demonstrated to play an important role in reducing insulin resistance and blood glucose.

Saturated fat intake can elevate the HbA1c level. The HbA1c level is a risk indicator of glycemia and diabetic complications. The study of Woo et al. suggested that supplementation of 0.05% and 0.2% fucoxanthin significantly reduced the blood HbA1c and plasma insulin level compared with the control group.

FX and its metabolites prevent the development of diabetes in a model of obese/diabetic mice (KK-Ay), but not in lean C57BL/6J mice through down-regulation of MCP-1, TNF-α, IL-6 and PAI-1 mRNA expression in the WAT of KK-Ay mice fed FX.

2. Fucoxanthin could ameliorate insulin resistance by promoting expression of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) mRNA in skeletal muscle tissues.

By suppressing the secretion of fat cells that inhibit the working of insulin, fucoxanthin has also increased the expression level of insulin receptors, resulting in improved insulin resistance. In addition, in skeletal muscle tissue, glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) plays a role in the metabolism of sugar, but when it comes to diabetes, it does not work properly. However, it is known that fucoxanthin increases the expression level of GLUT4 and promotes the uptake of sugars to prevent and improve diabetes.


FRs and oxidative stress are clearly involved in the pathogenesis of cancer disease, so carotenoids, by means of their antioxidant properties, are considered effective anti-cancer molecules. Many studies showed the anti cancer properties of Fucoxanthin especially against prostate cancer, human leukemia, and human colon cancer cell lines.

The main mechanism is suggested to be the regulatory effect of Fucoxanthin (FX) on biomolecules related to apoptosis and cell cycle.

Recently researchers found that FX induces cell cycle arrest in G2/M phase and apoptosis in human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells with the inhibition of growth in MGC-803 cell by FX resulting from cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Down-regulation of surviving, CyclinB1 by FX might contribute to the anti-cancer effects of FX, which may reduce CyclinB1 expression through JAK/STAT signal pathway, sequentially inhibiting proliferation of MGC-803 cells.

Moreover FX and fucoxanthinol induced cell growth arrest and apoptotic cell death in primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, at a concentration nontoxic to normal cells and these effects may be associated with functional inhibition of Hsp90 chaperon. These results suggest that dietary FX or fucoxanthinol could be potentially helpful for the treatment of PEL.

Activity on Cardiovascular System

FX would be very important to prevent cardiovascular system damage. FX acts on the reduction of major cardiovascular risk factors (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, plasma and hepatic triglyceride, and cholesterol concentrations).
An interesting metabolic benefit of FX administration in rodents is the promotion of the synthesis of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the liver, resulting in improvements in lipid profile.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

1. Research results demonstrated that fucoxanthin could reduce the levels of proinflammatory mediators including NO, PGE2, IL-1β, TNFα, and IL-6 by suppressing the NF-κB activation and the MAPK phosphorylation.

2. Additionally, fucoxanthin reduced the levels of iNOS and COX-2 proteins in a dose-dependent manner.

3. Fucoxanthin inhibited the degranulation of mast cells by suppressing the aggregation of FcεRI.

Hepatoprotective Effect

1. Fucoxanthin could increase fatty acid oxidation and decrease the hepatic lipid contents by regulating activities of hepatic lipid metabolic enzymes and stimulating β-oxidation activity.

2. Furthermore, Park et al. also demonstrated that fucoxanthin supplementation stimulated β-oxidation activity and reduced the phosphatidate phosphohydrolase activity resulting in the hepatic lipid droplet.

Anti-Photoaging Activity

A recent work showed for the first time the protective effect of FX against UVB-induced skin photoaging. In this study, Japanese researchers examined the effect of FX on UVB-induced photoaging in the skin of hairless mice by evaluating various parameters of photoaging. The results showed that the topical application of FX suppresses UV-induced expression in the skin. The antioxidant activity of FX might be involved in this anti-angiogenic effect, because ROS stimulate angiogenesis.
