  • Copper is a soft,and highly conductive metal that has been used by human societies since antiquity.Gold and meteoric iron were the only metal in common use prior to copper`s discovery circa 9000BCE.This early use was facilitated by the existense of native copper deposits,which could be worked cold due to the softnedd of the metal.However ,native copper is not particularly common,and eventually the process smelting of copper from ore was developed,which in turn led to the accidental discovery of alloying.
  • Adding another metal to copper increases its hardness and makes it easier to cast,making the metal considerably more useful.This occurred initially through the smelting of copper ores that contained small amonts of other metals,often arsenic and silicon,to produce a natural bronze.Later,it was discovered that bronze could be produced internationally by adding tin to copper melt.This advance occurred between 4500 BCE and 600 BCE

 

Analytical Challenge for 6N 99.9999% high purity copper

  • Trace elemental analysis of high purity 5N or 6N metals is challenging due to both the complete elemental  coverage required in the assay and the ultra low target levels.
    For example, the sum of all impurities in a 6N Cu (99.9999% purity) is only 1 ppm. For such high purity materials, a routine, full mass scan quantification of all elements at single digit ng.g-1 levels is required.
    In this application brief the Thermo Scientific™ ELEMENT™ GD high resolution glow discharge sector-field mass spectrometer is assessed for the impurity analysis of high purity copper.


Method for 99.9999% 6N high purity copper

  • In industrial manufacturing environments, the ELEMENT GD MS is used for routine production quality control in a 2 or 3 shift rotation. Sample throughput is therefore critical to ensure a timely feedback based on analytical results. Sample surfaces were prepared by wet grinding with SiC paper (grit 120). Milling would be an appropriate alternative for sample preparation.
    The instrumental parameters listed in Table 1 were defined to meet the needs of a routine production lab.

  •  With the development of semiconductor technology, the size of complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices has been scaled down to nanoscale dimensions. The technology of copper interconnection is the mainstream technology, so the request of the copper target is more and more rigor. This article analyzes the impact factors on the copper alloy target capability, including oxidation and strength. The aim of this investigation is to set up a bridge between the vendors of copper targets and the foundries of integrated circuit (IC) chip, and the base for the next generation copper targets.
  • Ultra-high-purity (99.999% or 99.9999%) copper rod having a RRR value of 5000 was prepared by a two-stage refining process, i.e., a combination of two processes, sulfate-electrorefining and zone-refining. In the first process, the potential of the cathode electrode was maintained at a level of 0.2V (vs NHE) at 25°C to prevent the deposition of more active metals than copper. In the second process, the width of the molten zone was made smaller than the diameter (16 mm) of the copper rod to obtain a higher refining efficiency. A wire of 0. 5 mm in diameter was drawn from the refined rod. The RRR value of the ultra-high-purity copper wire annealed in a N2 gas atmosphere at 500°C for two hours is as high as 4100, while that of conventional oxygen-free copper wire is usually 200. Ultra-high-purity copper will be suitable for applications in the superconducting field, electronic devices and so on.
