Standard Spiral Wound Gaskets with inner ring and outer ring or basic type
Spiral wound gaskets(SWG) have become extremely popular due to the wide variety of available styles and sizes. Spiral wound gaskets can be fabricated of any metal which is available in thin strip and which can be welded; therefore, they can be used against virtually any corrosive medium dependent upon the choice of the metal and filler. They can be used over the complete temperature range from cryogenic to approximately 2000ºF (1093ºC). This type of gasket can be used in all pressures from vacuum to the standard 2500 pressure class flange ratings. Spiral wound gaskets can also be manufactured with variable densities, i.e. relatively low density gaskets for vacuum service up to extremely high density gaskets having a seating stress of approximately 30,000 psi (207 MPa).The softer gaskets would require a seating stress in the range of 5,000 psi (34 MPa).
RS1-R: Basic type Spiral Wound Gaskets
Basic type spiral wound gasket consists of a thin metallic strip and soft non-metallic filler that are simultaneously wound on a rotating mandrel. The metal hoop is pre-formed with a V or W shaped profile which allows the gasket to act as a spring between the flanges. Further, the hoop provides the basic structural element for the gasket while the non-metal filler material seals small imperfections on the flange surfaces. Depend on its excellent compression resilient, it Is suitable for sealing spots where the alteration of temperature and pressure are frequent, such as tongue and groove joints, male and female facings and groove to flat flange facings. etc.
Basic type spiral wound gaskets are made in standard sizes to fit:
A. Large tongue and groove joints, 1/2 to 24 NPS, standard pressures;
B. Small tongue and groove joints, 1/2 to 24 NPS, standard pressures;
C. Large male and female joints 1/4 to 24 NPS, standard pressures.
RS1-CG: Spiral Wound Gaskets with Outer Ring
Spiral Wound Gaskets with Outer Ring, one kind of standard spiral wound gasket, consisted of a spiral wound sealing component with a solid metal outer guide ring. The outer guide ring serves to center the gasket properly in the flange joint, acts as an anti-blowout device, provides radial support for the spiral wound component, and acts as a compression gauge to prevent the spiral wound component from being over crushed. These gaskets are suitable for use with plain flat face flanges and raised face flanges.
Normally the outer guide rings are furnished in mild steel, but can be supplied in other metals when required by operating conditions.
RS1-RIR: Spiral Wound Gaskets with Inner Ring
Spiral Wound Gaskets with inner Ring is consisted of a spiral wound sealing component with a solid metal inner ring. Inward buckling of spiral-wound gaskets has been identified as a potential problem. Inner rings shall be furnished with all spiral-wound gaskets having PTFE filler material. Inner rings for flexible graphite-filled, spiral-wound gaskets shall be furnished unless the purchaser specifies otherwise. For all filler materials, inner rings shall be furnished in spiral-wound gaskets for
(a) NPS 24 and larger in Class 900
(b) NPS 12 and larger in Class 1500
(c) NPS 4 and larger in Class 2500
Inner rings are required for these gaskets due to high available bolt loads, which may result in outer ring damage. Suitable for male and female pipe flanges.
RS1-CGI: Spiral Wound Gaskets with Inner and outer ring
Spiral Wound Gaskets with Inner and outer ring is identical to style RS1-CG, with the addition of an inner ring. The inner ring also serves several functions. Primarily, it provides radial support for the gasket on the ID to help prevent the occurrences of buckling or imploding. The inner ring also serves as an additional compression limiter.
Its ID is normally sized slightly larger than the ID of the flange bore, minimizing turbulence in process flow. The inner rings are normally supplied in the same material as the spiral wound component. Rilson normally manufactures standard Style RS1-CG and RS1-CGI spiral wound gaskets to ASME B16.20, designed to suit ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47 flanges
