Spearmint (scientific name: Mentha spicata Linn.), Also known as green mint, savory mint, Dutch mint, green mint, cauliflower, fish coriander. It is an erect perennial herbaceous plant in the Labiatae family, with erect stems and purple or white flowers. The flowering period is from July to September. The temperature adapts to a large range, likes wetness and light, suitable for weakly acidic soils. Stem and leaves can be distilled to extract spearmint oil, which can be used as medicine or edible.
1. Spearmint, a diuretic, promotes urine flow and is often given for suppressed or painful urination, especially scalding urine. This property is useful for dropsy, or edema, and helps rid the body of excess water. It is thought to help flush gravel from the bladder, as well.
2. The herb is said to promote perspiration, which can be helpful for cooling the body and lowering fevers, it also helps to rid the body of toxins through the skin. As a diaphoretic, Spearmint is very helpful in cases of flu and colds, especially when accompanied by a fever.
