～What is "Washi"
"Washi" is a Japanese traditional paper. Originally, it was an extremely valuable item made by hand one by one from plants such as Kouzo, Ganpi, Mitsumata. However, machine-made washi is now widely distributed, and there are various kinds of colors and designs. Washi is used in various situations around us.
Washi paper has the characteristic that the fibers of paper are longer than general paper and that it is strong even if it is thin. Washi paper is used for the restoration of cultural properties around the world because of its excellent preservation. At Shosoin in Todaiji, a famous Japanese temple, Japanese paper made about 1300 years ago is stored as the oldest washi paper in Japan.
Originally used to write for the purpose of recording, washi paper is now being used for origami (paper folding), wrapping, Japanese fans, shoji paper, lampshades and wallpaper etc. There is also Japanese paper that can be printed, and it is often used as a label or packaging material when you want to enhance the quality of the product. Many of the masking tapes which are the first in Japan and popular stationery in the world, are made of thin washi paper, and are called overseas as "Washi tape".
